Tewkesbury – Open for Business!
When the recession started to bite and businesses closed in the Tewkesbury area, I decided it was time to try to lead some kind of fight-back.
Tewkesbury has suffered as all market towns have over the past few years but the flooding obviously made matters so much worse. But I felt that, no matter how much we had all suffered during that time, we needed to announce to people in the area and throughout the country that the floods were a thing of the past and that Tewkesbury is very much Open for Business!
So I got a small group of people together, including Canon Paul Williams and the Echo editor, to discuss how we could move on and suggested holding an event in the House of Commons, which everyone agreed would be a good idea.
Events at the Commons are not cheap to hold so I had to get some sponsorship and was pleased to receive support from Grundons, RR Donnelly’s, Severn vale and National Grid, and my thanks go to them for making the event possible..
Well, the day went spectacularly well. Over a hundred people, drawn from local businesses but also representatives of national businesses, attended and many good contacts were made. The message was that Tewkesbury is a great place to visit, live and do business.
I’ve since held a de-briefing meeting and am continuing to talk to businesses to try to bring them here. There is one major company interested so far, and Coach Tours UK and Shaw’s Coaches are visiting the Medieval festival as a direct result of the event.
