The Tewkesbury constituency doesn’t just include the town of Tewkesbury. It contains about fifty different communities spread over about 176 square miles.
It does, of course, include Tewkesbury, but other centres include Twyning, Ashchurch, Bishop’s Cleeve, Winchcombe, Prestbury, Brockworth, Churchdown, Innsworth, Leckhampton, Up Hatherley and Warden Hill. In addition, the seat includes many villages, as far apart as Snowshill and Little Witcombe. The River Severn forms the border of the constituency on the West and the County border provides the boundary to the North.
Leckhampton, Up Hatherley and Warden Hill leave the Tewkesbury constituency at the next General Election and go into Cheltenham, with Longlevens coming into the Tewkesbury constituency from Gloucester.
As well as being a large constituency, Tewkesbury is also very mixed. There is much farming and also much industry, with aerospace dominating. Indeed, the jet engine was developed by Sir Frank Whittle at Brockworth. And there are some areas which enjoy relative prosperity while other areas perhaps less so.
Other features include the magnificent, historic Tewkesbury Abbey, the building of which was started in the late 11th Century. It is of some historic dispute as to whether the Yorkist King Edward IV killed his opponents, who were supporters of the deposed Lancastrian King Henry VI, actually inside the Abbey during the Battle of Tewkesbury, which formed part of the War of the Roses, in 1471.
And there’s the racecourse at Prestbury Park, which falls within the Tewkesbury constituency boundaries, which is the home of National Hunt racing.
